SALT (Service Action Leadership Training)
The Purpose of SALT
The type of training that we hope to provide to you not only includes training in camp counseling, but will also include training in other areas of camp such as Bible Teacher, Dining Hall Supervisor, and Cooking. Our hope is that we can give you a broader overview of the operation of the whole camp so that in the near future you will be equipped to help others. The program consists of two phases.
SALT 1
The first phase is spent in special training classes and experience during Junior Week. Students will attend classes which are designed to train one to be a camp counselor. There will also be other training focused on camp activities during this time. The classes are taught on a pass/fail basis to the standard defined by the SALT Coordinator. Each student will spend at least 3 hours a day in class and have approximately 2 additional hours of outside class work daily. In order to pass, the student will ensure that assignments are completed on time, memory work is done, and tests are passed. Attitude is also an important aspect of course completion. Upon successful completion of the first phase, the student will be eligible to participate in the second phase of the program.
SALT 2
The second phase is spent as a junior counselor and helper the following year, during Intermediate Week. During the second phase of the program, the SALT student will act as a Junior Counselor in a cabin with an experienced camp counselor working with younger campers. The student will also be assigned other task during the week such as assisting with cooking and the dining hall duties, assisting during a Bible Class, leading at Chapel time and other tasks as assigned by the SALT Coordinator and the Directors of Intermediate Week.
Successful completion of this phase depends more upon the maturity and attitude of the student and less on any set testing or job list. The student may be used in other camp sessions with the approval of the Director and SALT Coordinator. There is no cost for the second phase. Successful completion of the second phase is based on the assessment of the senior counselor working with the student and the director of that session. There is no classroom training during this phase.
How can I become a SALT student?
To be accepted into the program, an applicant must complete a SALT application form and return it to the SALT Coordinator with a $10 deposit. A reference form will be sent to each person listed. The SALT program is opened to anyone entering 10th grade or older. Applications should be received before May 15th to be considered. If you are applying after that date, e-mail the SALT Coordinator before sending in application.
