MWBC Building Projects
Interestingly, Midwest Bible Camp does not own the facilities where we have held our camping programs for over 40 years. We actually rent them from the Lake Darling Youth Center. This long standing relationship has proven to be of great benefit to MWBC. It allows our board to focus primarily on the spiritual development of our campers while the Lake Darling board focuses on facility needs. Over the years, the two boards have worked together to identify facility enhancements that would be beneficial not only to MWBC, but also to all groups that rent at LDYC. MWBC helps promote facility projects to assist LDYC in raising the funds it needs to complete them. We're extremely thankful for the work that the Lake Darling board does to maintain and improve their facilities to meet our needs. MWBC supporters have made significant donations (of money and labor) towards the projects identified below and we greatly THANK them for their generosity. These funds, pooled with the tremendous funds that LDYC has raised, have resulted in wonderful improvements to the facility that are important because they keep our campers & staff safe and comfortable, enhance our programs, and make the jobs of staff (like our cooks) easier.
We invite everyone to consider contributing to our building fund. Please take a look of the list below for projects that have been completed and are in the development stages. If you have a suggestion for another facility improvement, please let us know.

Ongoing Projects
New Swimming Beach & Canoe Dock
With the DNR's completion of work on the spillway, the lake is scheduled to return to camp in 2013. The changes they made wil result in a lake this is 2' higher than it was in the past, which creates a need to redo the swimming beach and canoe areas. The DNR will complete the work, but LDYC will have to pay for it. MWBC is not actively seeking donations for this project, but we would be happy to pass along any funds that our supporters would like to make to this project. (estimated cost: $10,000, raised to date: $0)

Completed Projects
Repurpose Old Nurse's Cabin into New Sports Equipment Shed - Completed 2012
With the new nurse's cabin built, LDYC was kind enough to let MWBC have the nurse's portion of the shed and turn it into a larger sports equipment shed exclusively for our use. We added shelving and now have plenty of room to store our sports equipment so it can be kept organized and so it is easy for our Sports Directors to find equipment. MWBC supporters contributed around $1,000 for shelving and other materials. |
Replace Old Bathhouse with new Nurse's Cabin - Completed 2012
We found a new use for the old bathhouse. We tore down the old building and used the materials for erosion control around the lagoon. We then took advantage of the cement slab and plumbing in the building and built a new, larger, air conditioned nurse's cabin with a staff side and a infirmary side with bathrooms on each side. The building also contains a stackable washer & dryer for the nurse's use. This will be much more convenient for the nurse and anyone needing medical attention. The remainder of the building can be used as a storage facility for canoes and the new tractor. MWBC also provided a movable, lockable treatment cart and built a deck and ramp on the back of the building as a fire exit. While most of the building was paid for through a grant and donated labor, MWBC supporters contributed approximately $6,000 to this project.
Kitchen Improvements - (Completed 2008-2011)
|
At Midwest Bible Camp, we like to keep our cooks happy because they keep us very happy with great food. To do so, we have helped to replace several important pieces of kitchen equipment over the last few years including two refrigerators in 2008 (MWBC supporters donated one at a cost of $4,100), a convection oven in 2009 ($2,700), a freezer in 2010 ($500), kitchen mats in 2010 ($1,100), ice machine in 2011 ($1,900), and grill and garbage disposal in 2011.

Build Chapel Stage - Completed 2009
We enhanced the chapel that was built a few years ago by adding a stage to the front for speakers, skits, etc. The stage was ready for use in 2009 and we built it ourselves during our Spring Workday. MWBC supporters built the new stage, installed lighting and donated $2,600 of materials to complete this project.

Replace Food Storage Shed - Completed 2009
We built a new food shed for the use of our cooks. The new building is bigger, has a concrete floor, has better storage and lighting to find food easier, and allows us to keep our food separate from other groups that rent LDYC. MWBC supporters donated $4,000 to cover the cost of this project.
Two Cabins - Completed 2008
Two new cabins were built and used first for the summer of 2008! Each cabin houses ten campers, so MWBC capacity increased to 120 campers per session. Both cabins are on the cabin 7-10 side and are located near the volleyball court. MWBC supporters donated labor and around $3,000 of materials to build one of the cabins while another group of MWBC supporters built the second cabin. |
New Bath House & Storm Shelter - Complete in 2008 and Paid Off 2011
Construction on the new bathhouse began in 2007 and was completed summer 2008. A grant was received for most of the cost. The new bathhouse is located on the north side of the basketball court, and has an underground storm shelter that can also be used for class area and storage. Extensive concrete work has also been done to connect the bathhouse to the basketball court and to provide walkways to the basement. MWBC supporters contributed almost $26,000 to this project.
Dining Hall Addition - Completed 2007
In 2007, Midwest Bible Camp supporters gave over $20,000 to add about 20 feet onto the front of the dining hall. This has made it possible to seat more than 175 people in the dining hall for a meal. When the area is not needed for dining, it is used as an office and classroom area. And it's also used for registration. Ten new tables and some new benches have also been added.
Enclosing the Shelter House - Completed 2007
In the past, the shelter was under utilized, being away from the rest of the camp and being open to the weather, bugs and animals. In 2007, MWBC supporters contributed labor and $5,000 in materials to enclose the shelter with screening, new doors, a storage area and storm curtains. It can now be used for a new craft area, class area, and meeting place, freeing up the trophy room for class area and a game area.
