Servant Attitude Leadership Training
The Purpose of SALT
The Servant Attitude Leadership Training program strives to provide training in camp counseling and other areas of camp leadership such as Bible Class Teacher, Dining Hall Supervisor, Cook, etc. The goal is to provide experience, training, and a broad overview of the operation of the whole camp. We hope that through the SALT program, future camp leaders will be equipped to continue the important ministry of Christian Camping. The MWBC SALT program consists of the following two phases.
SALT 1
Servant Attitude Leadership Training phase 1 is conducted during Junior Week. The focus of this first year of training is on camp counseling. Students will spend 2 hours in class and complete 1 hour of additional assignments outside of class. Students will be asked to spend a lot of time observing campers and staff while learning the basic skills necessary to become a quality counselor. Students are placed in a cabin with campers and an experienced head counselor so that they are able to observe and experience first-hand the demands and blessings of counseling. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, a certificate is given and the student may continue training the following summer in SALT II.
SALT 2
Servant Attitude Leadership Training phase 2 is conducted during Intermediate Week. The focus of this second year of training is 3 fold: 1) Leadership training, 2) Exploration of staff positions outside of counseling, and 3) Continued training in counseling. Students are placed in a cabin with campers and an experienced counselor. During the SALT II training phase, students will take on more of a co-counselor role. The training sessions consist of 2 hours of class-time and various outside assignments. Participation in various staff roles, including helping the cooks for a day, giving a devotional talk, etc. will be part of the hands-on training. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, a certificate is given and the student may be recommended for service as a staff member.
Successful completion of this phase depends more upon the maturity and attitude of the student and less on any set testing or job list. The student may be used in camp sessions with the approval of the Director and SALT Coordinator. Successful completion of the second phase is based on the assessment of the senior counselor working with the student and the director of that session.
